Congregation B’nai Israel
St. Petersburg, FL
Congregation B’nai Israel of St. Petersburg hosts Pinellas County’s 2nd annual Pride Shabbat service, Friday, June 23 at 6:30pm celebrating equality and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, and questioning Jews, friends, families and allies. The Friday Night Kabbalat Shabbat service is the only Jewish LGBTQA+ Pride event on Florida’s West Coast.
CBI’s Cantor Jonathan Schultz will lead singing with his guitar using both traditional and pop culture melodies to enhance the service.
The congregation returns to the St. Pete Pride Festival on Sunday, June 25, on Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg, welcoming festival-goers to learn about the congregation and preschool.
Judaism teaches human beings are created b’tzelem elohim – in the image of God. CBI President Susan Marger LeVine says, “At Congregation B’nai Israel, we welcome people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the religious, social, and educational life of our congregation and believe each individual is essential to our success as a synagogue and a community. Pride Shabbat is an opportunity for the community to come together side by side to share joyous and meaningful prayer in an inclusive environment.”
