   Dear High School Student:

 I am pleased to announce that the 2010 Spring Semester of Congregation B’nai Israel’s Hebrew High School will soon be getting under way. Please read carefully the enclosed materials describing our exciting Hebrew High School Program.

 Pre-register by sending your completed Registration Form and $125.00 Registration Fee  to the Synagogue Office by January 28, 2010 .

 Assignment of courses will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.

 The registration fee is $150.00 if paid after January 28, 2010 .

Final Registration will take place on Wednesday, February 3rd at 6:45 p.m.

 We look forward to a dynamic and exciting course of study for the Spring Semester, 5770. Classes will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., beginning FEBRUARY 3, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. All Jewish teenagers are invited –  so bring your friends!

 Sandy Brasch, our Youth Director invites you to join her for a light dinner – “Dine & Dash” at 6:00 pm in the Youth Lounge.  Please let Sandy  know that you will be attending by calling the synagogue at 381-4900 or by email, Youthdir@cbistpete.org .

MISHNA BRAHOT II                                                                                 Instructor:  Rabbi Jacob Luski

                                                                                                                                      Text:  Mishna Brahot

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  A continuation of the study of the Tractate Brahot of the Mishna, a second century code of law, dealing with the Jewish approach to prayer.  Subjects to be covered include the following:  Shema, Amidah, Kiddush, Havdala, assorted blessings, and benedictions. We will look at this material as it applies to us today.  (Required for all ninth grade students.)

 

HEBREW CALLIGRAPHY                                                                           Instructor:  Rivy Chapman

                                                                                                                           

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will practice the basic strokes, study the styles of various calligraphers, design their own alef bet, and illustrate selected Jewish concepts.

Materials provided:  calligraphy pens, graph paper and printouts

                                                                                                              Text:  Exploring Rabbinic Literature

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course will provide highlights of Jewish contributions to modern ethical and religious thinking. Jewish thought will be developed from its original sources. Let’s study how our traditional sources continue to have a major impact on the way in which we, as Jews, view the Biblical sources and formulate our various world views. The texts chronicle the development of Jewish values and ideas as they adapt to the ever-changing social and economic conditions of our society.

            Joshua was part of the original group sent by Moshe to explore the land. He was one of only two

            who survived the years in the desert. Come discover what made him special..why Joshua was, in fact,

            destined to lead the Children of Israel into the land promised to the Patriarchs. Learn about the Judges

            who never wore court robes or sat in a courtroom. Discussion - Drama - Mystery and Intrigue.
