SESSION 1: If You Knew Esther Like I Know Esther
Examine events in the life of Esther through a close reading of Megillat Esther (the Book of Esther), integrating study of the traditional text with a modern literary approach. Explore how Esther grew into her role as leader and savior of the Jewish people and how her life and actions are relevant to us.
SESSION 1: Esther Sources
SESSION 2: The Women of the Exodus Women of the Exodus Source Sheets
"Israel was redeemed from Egypt because of the righteous women of that generation." (Talmud) Examine the pivotal and sometimes-disregarded role of women in the Passover story through close reading of Biblical text and commentary.
SESSION 3: The Women Behind the Throne: King David's Origins Sources
We read the Scroll of Ruth on Shavuot and, according to tradition, mark the birth and death of King David. King David rose to the throne, in no small part, through the actions of several women. Examine how Ruth, Tamar and Lot's daughters--King David's ancestors--assured their families' survival and King David's birth through initiative and transgressive sexual behavior.
