Pride Shabbat
Friday, June 23, 2023 • 4 Tammuz 5783
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Dear CBI Friends,
Our eighth annual Pride Shabbat starts June 23. For the first time, Temple Beth-El is partnering with us. It will be a fun, engaging weekend. Please put it in your calendar.
Our special guest has a national profile both here and in Israel. He is Rabbi Steve Greenberg, the first openly gay Orthodox rabbi and founder of Jerusalem’s LGBTQ community center. He is featured in the documentary, “Trembling before God,” and has traveled around the world participating in post-screening panels. He is the author of the award-winning book, Wrestling with God & Men: Homosexuality in the Jewish Tradition.
Tombolo Books will host a book signing with the rabbi in the lobby at 5:30pm before the Friday service. (Note: the service begins at 6:00pm - earlier than usual.)
Even better, we are lucky enough to have a second speaker, Jessica Pierce. Jessica is a Florida native who came out as queer in their 30s and cares deeply about social justice. They started attending Temple Beth-El during the pandemic. Regarding the LGBTQ+ community, Jessica spends a lot of time writing about why queerness is holy.
Temple Beth-El’s Rabbi Jenn Mangold and our own Rabbi Weintraub will lead the liturgy together Friday evening with musicians from both congregations providing a lively musical experience. After the service, we’ll enjoy a festive cocktail oneg in the social hall.
At Friday’s service, Rabbi Greenberg will explore the biblical prohibition against homosexuality. On Saturday, “The Joys & Threats of Inclusion for an Exclusive People,” with an expanded kiddush luncheon celebrating Pride Month.
All programs are free, open to the public, and particularly welcome LGBTQ+ Jews, allies, friends, and families.
Our Pride Shabbat was the first in Florida. It shows the entire community that everyone belongs at CBI. Spread the word - we want to fill the sanctuary!
Best,
Valerie Hyman
