Sunday, February 17, 10:30 am: "Mozart & the Jewish Haskalah"
The Florida Orchestra's concerts Feb. 22-24 feature two works: Mozart's 27th Piano Concerto and Mendelssohn's music for A Midsummernight's Dream. Mozart's final piano concerto embraces not only Enlightenment ideals, but also late 18th Century Masonic principles. These same influences shaped the philosophies of the Jewish Haskalah of which Felix Mendelssohn's grandfather Moses was a major proponent. This interactive program explores how music and philosophy intertwined in the period 1775 - 1850 to create both of these masterful compositions.
Sunday, March 17, 10:30 am: "Bereshit and Haydn's Creation"
On March 22nd through the 24th, The Florida Orchestra joins with the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay and soloists to present Franz Joseph Haydn's great oratorio, the Creation. As a life-long Catholic employed by a prominent supporter of the Holy Roman Empire, Haydn composed mostly Masses when it came to choral music. The text for this work, however, comes entirely from the early chapters of the Hebrew Bible. We shall listen together to discover how Haydn brought the pages of Bereshit to life in this remarkable composition.
Sunday, April 28, 10:30 am: "The Freudian World of Mahler's First Symphony"
Gustav Mahler developed his dramatic, highly personal musical language in the same era that Freud and others were developing the new field of psychology. Mahler was heavily influenced by Freud's dream, memory and psycho-sexual theories and even consulted the famous doctor during a period of deep psychological anguish. The First Symphony predates these visits by over a decade, but it nonetheless can be considered "Freudian." in The Florida Orchestra will perform this great work May 3 & 4.
