When I start reading a Bernard Malamud short story, I find I must finish it in one sitting. It’s not the story’s action that captivates me, but it’s the process in which Malamud reveals the characters he wants us to know. As we read, we quickly form relationships with individuals struggling with a variety of life’s challenges:  poverty, loneliness, isolation, the search for love, the need for acceptance, the longing to matter. We laugh with them and cry for them, and we cheer them on.

And we wait in great anticipation for a resolution. We’re often relieved, or surprised, or sometimes disappointed at the outcome, but it’s one that always stands as a “teaching moment.”

We get all of this in brilliantly crafted Bernard Malamud short stories often described as parables.  We and the protagonists learn lessons – and as the reader, we are guaranteed to walk away having discovered a bit more about ourselves.

You can purchase a copy of the book online via Barnes & Noble, Thriftbooks, or Amazon, or ask your favorite local bookstore to order a copy for you (if you don't know where your nearest bookseller is, you can look one up on IndieBound).

Join us for three October zoom sessions at 7PM: Thursdays, October 7, 14, and 21.  Contact Jill Weisberg at bellallure1@aol.com for questions.
