Am I My Brother's Keeper

Dear friends,

In a stomach-turning scene in the movie, ”Marathon Man”, Dr. Christian Szell performs dental torture on the young protagonist  while continuously asking “is it safe?“ While neither a dentist nor a torturer the question is one that is asked both of me and by me on a daily basis.

Why are we being so cautious some ask. The medical experts that I speak with wonder how we could even think about allowing a group to come together in an environment of ever climbing pandemic numbers.

I look up to the heavens and ask “Am I my brother’s keeper?”  After all most of us are adults and thus have the right to decide on the amount of risk we wish to take.   If someone else makes the wrong decision.…so be it!

Alas, the answer I receive is that I am indeed my brother’s keeper as is every other individual in our society who has taken on the responsibility of leadership.  We have sworn to protect both our constituents and the institutions we lead.  Even more importantly is the fact that each of us is part of the family of humankind and that in the face of this killer disease we must pledge to look out for each other and do all we can to protect and preserve lives.

There is no doubt that our doors will open once again. For now, there needs to be an acknowledgement that CBI isn’t just a place we go to. It is a reflection of who we are. Worshipping, praying, and studying are what we do---with or without entry into a  building.  Yes, it is hard to replace the joy of physically standing “side by side” with each other, but with prayer and study we can find solace and hopefully peace with the harsh realities of our time. It is too dangerous to get too close for too long anywhere.

With care,

Dorothy
